With this inaugural blog post, I aim to define the state of being I wish for you, for me and for our culture: sustainable vibrancy. I coined the term “sustainable vibrancy” back when I was pursuing my MBA in sustainable business in 2012. As often is the experience of many graduate students, I was in a period of reflection, searching for an ideal state that I could aspire to that would bring me peace and satisfaction within my life. While there were many qualities I dreamt about having in my life, from fitness to wealth to beauty to relationship contentment and personal joy and fulfillment, no one area seemed to encompass the total package, until I hit upon the notion of striving to achieve a state of sustainable vibrancy.
A common refrain many espouse these days is that “You can’t have it all.” Or, some even say, “You can have it all, but not at the same time.” These types of maxims are supposed to make us feel better for falling short of some perfect experience of what it is to be a successful human being. We are supposed to be able to forgive ourselves for being imperfect. While that’s a noble agenda, the Law of Attraction practitioner in me feels uncomfortable with the negative verbiage promoted by such dictums. It tacitly implies limitations in the quest to have an abundantly fulfilling life. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want anything in my mindset that may unconsciously roadblock rewards I may like to enjoy. So, my thought is that there must be a better way to conceptualize the ideal state of being, one that doesn’t set you up to only enjoy one area of personal fulfillment at a time or perhaps fuel feelings of failure, or that places any restrictions on manifesting ultimate blessings.
Enter the concept of sustainable vibrancy. I define sustainable vibrancy as a cultivated state of vitality that preserves the resource of one’s self so we have an optimal chance to capitalize on the opportunities that surround us. This is to say that when you just plain feel good and are beaming about how you are operating in life physically, emotionally and spiritually, the abundance to come your way can be exponential.
Every day in the spa we treat people who have fallen off track with taking care of themselves. While some have simply let their good intentions fall by the wayside, some folks have embraced a mindset that time and money invested in sustaining one’s personal vibrancy is selfish. Although, I would argue that preserving yourself as a resource is the most selfless thing you can do. Consider the biblical instruction to “Love our neighbors as ourselves.” If we don’t love ourselves sufficiently and we aren’t refilling our own cup, how do we have any capacity to help our neighbors, friends, family, coworkers or anyone else? When we are barren and all dried up, we have no gifts to offer the world. Thus, we must preserve and nurture ourselves as a foundational resource. We must continually reset, refuel and rebalance to sustain our vibrancy, inside and out, and to serve the vibrancy of the world around us.
The goal, then, of this blog is to explore ideas that may support the journey to sustainable vibrancy as it is reflected in your mind, body, spirit and personal fulfillment. We will talk about the ups and downs and ins and outs as well as life hacks that may help us level up all the quicker. I hope you will join me in this quest to achieve this ideal state. It’s so much easier and more rewarding when you walk with friends and the experience can be shared.
Sending you love and light for the journey!
